There is very little you can do to for a shattered cornea.
They don't really heal.
They seal and then they burst open again.
Bits wash out with the tears.
Day by day there is an erosion until there is nothing but a damp hole.
Passerbys fill the socket with gravel or glass or filaments of lightbulbs
as though giving alms to the poor.
How did it happen?
You could call it an accident.
I did once.
I told people that I had been dancing,
that my partner had elbowed me in the eye.
Each week it would change color---
the deep pomogranate turning violent
and then a greyish-yellow, tinges of blue.
It was the truth, then.
